The snake in Celtic mythology was a symbol of wisdom, cunning, fertility and immortality/reincarnation (as it sheds it's skin, and is born anew).
Kin to the Dragon, horned snakes often feature in Celtic art and mythology as guardians of golden treasure, secrets and knowledge. Dragons in British folklore are often snake-like - the legless "wyrms" lake and sea serpents, and many characteristics and symbolism is shared by both.

Snakes represented the powers of Nature, healing, but also hidden dangers - as the Adder, common to Europe, is venomous.. Jewellery featuring snakes, as with dragons, represented Kingship, power and divine authority. The snake is also an ancient symbol for healing.
